The Shildon Railway Works were opened in 1825 and closed in 1982.

Plaque is heavy cast iron, 11 inches by 6 1/2 inches by 3/8 inches thick and weighing 6 pounds, 4 ounces. Good condition, letters worn, light rust, wear with regular heavy use. The letters look better in person than they do in the photograph.
