Product code: Vintage retail Indian Punjab Phulkari embroidered fitted tunic with laces in front
A rare and unique vintage find, this tunic, which could also be worn as a short mini dress, probably came from the mid 20th century. From the Punjab region, Phulkari refers to this particular style of rich embroidery. The base cloth is a coarse, hand spun, hand woven cotton dyed with natural dye stuffs to make a rich, earth red. It is then embroidered with silk floss in brilliant colors of saffron, orange, magenta, and cream white, with occasional touches in a kind of yellowy celery green. Mustard colored thick satin or silk laces go up the front. I have yet to find anything like this in my research besides tapestries with very similar embroidery patterns and colors. It's absolutely stunning. There are some discolorations likely due to its age and being stored. A few areas where the embroidery is worn, but barely noticeable. Overall it is in very good vintage condition. Approx measurements taken flat armpit retail to armpit 17” shoulder to hem 31” waist 15” sleeve 23” T485.
