This is an extremely wonderful original collection of 13 framed tin tobacco tags from the early 1900's. This measures approximately 7-3/4 inches square and 3/4 inches deep. Bought at an estate sale.

After the Civil War demand for South tobacco soared. Since the competition was so tight tobacco companies issued these tags from 1870 to 1920 to identify themselves. This also helped prevent people from buying someone else inferior product as it made it harder for store owners to "refill" the tobacco with an inferior product.
These colorful tags were used by tobacco manufacturers to advertise. Tin tags were introduced prior to 1880 and continued in use through the 1900's and peaked approximately 1917. Tags were also collected and later redeemed for items such as picture cards. Use of tags ended in 1930. These tags are presumably manufactured sometime in the early 1900's specifically the Lorillard Co. and Ben Finzer brands.
