Handmade Osage Orange Wood Carving Mallet 24 Oz, Carvers Mallet, Gift retail For Dad Mom, Tenons, Dovetails, Hand Crafted, Leather Woodworking
Osage Orange handcrafted carving mallet I personally split the log turned the mallet.
Osage Orange handcrafted carving mallet. I personally split the log, turned the mallet, shaped, sanded and finished through all steps. This particular mallet weighs ~24 ounces and is ~11-1/2 inches long. The head is ~3 inches in diameter and ~5-1/4 inches long. The mallet has been completed with boiled linseed oil and beeswax for that hand rubbed satin finish. Please zoom pictures for better detail.
Osage Orange is a very hard wood and registers more than 2600 on the Janka hardness scale. White Oak as a reference is ~1300.
The trees acquired the name bois d'arc, or "bow-wood", from early French settlers who observed the wood being used for war clubs and bow-making by Native Americans.
The mallet is one that you will be able to use for a lifetime and is perfect for cutting dovetails and tenons or for fine detailed carving. The yellow color will change to a rich brown over time.
