Many of the much maligned British oddities are here: Toad in the Hole; Haggis, genuine Christmas pudding; Trifle (a particular horror of mine as a child. The collection is oddly lacking in fruit fools, and where is that wonderful nursery treat “Treacle Tart” a blissful mixture of Lyle's Golden Syrup, bread-crumbs, and butter, flavored with lemon and baked in a short pastry shell? Sometimes served with a lattice of pastry for “company”. Some of the recipes are attributed, and some are taken from early cook books.
