Horn scales, retail Hollow ground, Shave Ready ANTIQUE Reynolds Razor

It shaves like a dream! This beautifully unique Frederick Reynolds razor is 5/8 in thick with a square point and hollow ground circa 1880. What makes this razor very special is that it is in pressed horn scales with an elaborate pattern on one side of them. Pressed horn scales were a way for English razors to compete with the ever-growing popularity of the full hollow ground German razors coming out of retail Solingen.

For this restoration I took off the scales, cleaned them, and stabilized some damage. There is a bend on the end of the scales but the razor seat with some adjustment. It was honed on 1k grit and then 6k grit Japanese water stones and then on to polishing compound and a bare strop.
