Description

Product Name: Hopi Maiden Kachina Cradle Doll retail with Tableta Headdress, Hand Painted Katsina Wood Carving, Native America Arts and Crafts Collectible

This simple carved and painted wood Katsina (or Kachina) is of a form I've known as a "half doll" or "cradle doll" meaning it was carved from a flat piece of cottonwood and has painted parts instead of carved ones and is meant to hang. Also, the paint is not the traditional mineral paints of kachinas but rather tempura paint. It would have been made for the tourist market, and although it is likely circa 1950s to 60s, the paint is still vibrant thanks to the fact that tempura paint was used. It has a piece of string tied around the neck, and the flat wood has a bit of a curve to it. At the estate where I purchased it, the doll was hung onto a bedpost--they called it a "Mother" kachina, which it may be.

Measures 8-3/8" tall by about 3-1/4" wide and about 1" deep. Weighs 4.6 ounces. Missing some feathers.

Great gift for the person who appreciates Southwestern art and culture.
